In 2012, Camilo obtained his Ph.D. in Structural Biology of Membrane Proteins at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysics in Frankfurt, Germany. For his work on the mechanism of the osmoregulated transporter BetP, Camilo received the Otto Hahn Medal from the Max Planck Society and a Summa cum laude doctoral degree from the Goethe University Frankfurt. In 2013, Camilo received an EMBO Long-Term Fellowship and an ETH Postdoctoral Fellowship, and joined the lab of Prof. Kaspar Locher at ETH Zürich. At ETH, Camilo elucidated the structure and mechanism of the ABC transporter flippase PglK, involved in protein N-glycosylation in the bacterial pathogen Campylobacter jejuni. In 2017, Camilo was awarded a SNSF professorship to establish his research group at Biozentrum as a non-tenure track Assistant Professor. His team focused on the mechanistic biology of membrane proteins involved in cell wall biosynthesis in bacterial pathogens, e.g. Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae. In 2020 Camilo obtained an EMBO Young Investigator award from the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO). In 2024, Camilo obtained a tenure-track Assistant Professor position at the University of Georgia (GA, USA), where his team will expand their research on mechanistic biology of membrane proteins. ​
